Tessellation Project
Project Description/Response
The Truth of Tessellations in Art and Math
In this project we were required to study the concept of patterns created by M.C. Escher. Escher was captivated by these patterns so much that he chose for it to be his profession. He classified his work as Art. In this project we were asked if math could really be art. This brought us to creating our own tessellations and we had the ability to use our imaginations to create the design for our tessellations.
I created a tessellation using basketball sneakers. I constructed a tessellation template by cutting the shape of a basketball shoe out of a square of a manila folder and then taping the shoe shape that I cut out back on top of the manila square giving me 2 shoes on one template. Then I used that template on a long piece of paper to create my tessellation design.
I believe that tessellations are a combination of math and art. Art consists of shaped. Every piece of art has shapes in it. Math explains art, conveys what shapes are, and why those shapes are a certain way and that study of math is called geometry. I believe art and math consist in the same world not opposites. They are connected in almost every way. If you truly go into depth of art and math then you will find that they are more so intertwined than you can imagine.
