Project Description
How has DNA evidence/analysis affected our country's Justice System?
That was the question we were asked at the beginning of this project. We watched a movie that helped explain this movie a little more. The movie is titled, "West Memphis Three". It is about 3 teenagers who were wrongly convicted of murdering 3 young boys. After 30 years in prison the teenagers were released through new found DNA evidence. This helps us understand the idea of how DNA analysis has affected our Justice System in America. Connected to this part of the project we had to research a individual through the California Innocence Project that was exonerated through DNA evidence. That is how we connected that part of the project to the Justice System of America.
In the next part of this project, we were given a partner and a specific crime scene to investigate. Each partner was given certain responsibilities to the case regarding DNA analysis. For these responsibilities such as fingerprint analysis and blood spatter analysis we had to write reports with a brief history and description of the science we used to analyze the evidence. All of this evidence was compiled together at the end of the project to reach a common goal of finding a criminal from our suspects.
I thoroughly enjoyed this project because it engaged me in real life possibilities. The crime scene we were given was realistic and it helped me learn how most of the crimes in the United States are solved. This project has really given me a new perspective on what the jobs of detectives and CSI teams have to go through. It has also given me a new perspective on how this evidence is used in our justice system and sometimes how used incorrectly and can result in a false conviction. I am grateful for all the information and perspectives this project has given me.
